Installing a solar powered water heating system may be the single most cost-effective way an individual or family can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, at the same time reducing your utility bills.

How the system works

Our evacuated (vacuum) tube systems are available in two main types; metal heat pipe or glass conductors, both contained within an evacuated glass outer tube. In both cases, the inner glass tube has a special coating that absorbs the solar energy. The heat is retained because of the insulating quality of the vacuum which works much like a thermos flask. The vacuum is such a good insulator that while the inside tube or heat pipe may be 150 degrees C, the outside is cold to the touch, only the tip is hot. The copper heat pipe system has a somewhat higher efficiency quotient than the glass due to metal’s greater conductivity.

Both the metal heat pipe and glass conductor systems contain a small amount of glycol which vapourizes at a relatively low temperature and carries the heat into the insulated header tank. There it condenses and returns in a cycle that continues as long as the sun shines, even on relatively cloudy days, and regardless of the outside temperature. It is this changing of state, from liquid to vapour and back that gives thetubes such high efficiency (estimated to be 40% better than flat plate collectors). And because there is no water in the tubes, there is no risk of freezing or leakage.

The unit serves as a pre-heater for the main domestic water tank. Cold water is fed from the main supply to the solar heater header tank; heated water feeds back into the main hot water tank. There is no need for pumps or electrical controls. The pipes are usually fed through the wall cavities of the house, although, suitably insulated, they could run outside the building. Although usually roof-mounted, the unit can be installed anywhere on the property to obtain optimum solar exposure.
